What Is SEO?

You may have asked yourself in the past, “What is SEO?” and how it works. You’re not alone. In fact, this is one of the most common questions we receive from clients here at Hiilite. In this blog, we’ll provide some insight into what SEO is and how it fits in to the digital marketing landscape.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

It is the process of increasing both the quality and quantity of traffic by adhering to search engine’s (i.e. Google) best practices. You might have heard a lot about SEO and how it works, but at the end of the day, it is essentially a consistent decision making process based on math (Google and other search engine’s algorithms) and other signals that your web property is sending. This foundation forms the basis for which sites these search engines choose to include in their results.

We see some confusion from clients and potential clients about what exactly SEO is. In most cases, its not a series of ‘hacks’ or ‘voodoo’ that magically ranks you atop the search engine results pages. Instead, it is a long game that as you continue to meet the needs of those searching online, providing answers to valuable questions, Google and other search engines reward your website.

Google is like a really intense metal detector, constantly running search queries through its algorithm, evaluating the signals it receives from websites. Our job as an SEO specialists is to fill your pockets full of coins in this case.

This isn’t a quick process. The analogy we like to use at our agency is that SEO is much like going to the gym, with a few exceptions, getting in shape is a long process. The same is true with SEO.

This becomes even more apparent in competitive markets such as: Calgary, Kelowna, Vancouver, New York City and Los Angeles.
