The Vulnerability Challenge
The Vulnerability Challenge is a self-help personal development movement started by Colin Bender; the idea being to be ourselves on social media. Specifically our actual, questioning, imperfect selves.
Colin started it out of a feeling of dissatisfaction with other traditional methods of self-help or healing, such as yoga, meditation, counselling, etc. He still felt pain and still felt somehow untruthful to himself and decided that his personal development meant an admittance to vulnerability, and therefore authenticity. By sharing it on a website that managed to both capture his journey and propel it towards others, via life coaching, do some good to those others suffering in a similar way.
He engaged Hiilite Creative Group for website design, logo, and social media, such as Facebook. He has had many positive responses via social media from others who have managed to identify their pain as from living too long with a lie of some kind. The idea being they know who they are, but they are constricted from personal development out of a debilitating fear of what people might think.
Speaking of challenge, the one Hiilite Creative Group faced was how to articulate, not just in words but in the right imagery, the right feel, someone’s personal development? It seems to present the problem of how do you “show” someone’s intellectual/emotional journey? How do you look as authentic as they want to be? What would be the marketing strategy?
To realize his vision, and his brand, we researched what others were doing re personal development issues and settled on Humans Of New York. We loved this as it helped us figure out Colin’s audience and come up with ideas. The site ended up using traditional inspirational (outdoors, water) imagery to accompany Colin’s story and testimonials from people he has reached. This was key, as we felt Colin’s story worked best if it went beyond him and clearly addressed others needing personal development. An experience we rank with our favourite work.
Engaging with design
First impressions are forever. A website design must have an easy, built-in navigation.A logo must get at the heart of what the client says in addition to having memorability and adaptability. The serenity of blue and directness of white show authenticity and directness.
Sharing is caring
Colin maintained his journey through a series of posts and had responses to those with similar challenges. The simplicity and power of his message is ideal for sharing and enables people around the world to be similarly open and inspire others, so it is a gift that keeps on giving.
Take the long view
Long-shot nature photography helps make the point that the Vulnerability Challenge is not just one person’s story but can be inspiring for everyone. Showing a peaceful, contemplative type of setting helps keep Colin’s message of personal development positive and attractive.
